2020 Golden Globe Nominations:

It’s that time of the year where the awards season starts to kick into gear. The Hollywood Foreign Press Associations (HFPA) have announced their 2020 nominees and while there are some nice admissions, there are some equally baffling omissions. Down below I’ll dissect what should win, who will win, what could win and what got snubbed- and maybe, just maybe, you’ll discover some of these gems for yourself. As a disclaimer I have not seen every movie nominated, and some of my analysis is based off either early critical reception or buzz around a movie.

Best Motion Picture- Drama

  1. 1917
  2. The Irishman- will win
  3. Joker
  4. Marriage Story- should win
  5. The Two Popes

Snubs: Little Women, Parasite- due to it being ineligible

Best Motion Picture- Comedy or Musical

  1. Dolemite is my Name
  2. Jojo Rabbit- could win
  3. Knives Out- could and should win
  4. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood- will win
  5. Rocketman

Snubs: The Farewell- due to it being ineligible

Best Performance in a Motion Picture Drama (Actor)

  1. Christian Bale (Ford v Ferrari)
  2. Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory)- could win
  3. Adam Driver (Marriage Story)- will and should win
  4. Joaquin Phoenix (Joker)
  5. Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes)

Snubs: Robert DeNiro (The Irishman), Adam Sandler (Uncut Gems)

Best Performance in a Motion Picture Drama (Actress)

  1. Cynthia Erivo (Harriet)
  2. Scarlet Johansson (Marriage Story)- will and should win
  3. Saoirse Ronan (Little Women)- could win
  4. Charlize Theron (Bombshell)
  5. Renee Zellweger (Judy)- could win

Snubs: Lupita Nyong’o (Us)- otherwise potentially see this line-up at the Oscars.

Best Performance in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical (Actor)

  1. Daniel Craig (Knives Out)
  2. Roman Griffin Davis (Jojo Rabbit)
  3. Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood…)- will win
  4. Taron Egerton (Rocketman)- should win
  5. Eddie Murphy (Dolemite is my Name)- should and could win

Snubs: no notable snubs

Best Performance in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical (Actress)

  1. Ana De Armas (Knives Out)
  2. Awkwafina (The Farewell)- will and should win
  3. Beanie Feldstein (Booksmart)
  4. Cate Blanchett (Where’d You Go Bernadette?)
  5. Emma Thompson (Late Night)

Snubs: Constance Wu (Hustlers), Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart)

Best Supporting Performance in a Motion Picture (Actor)

  1. Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood)
  2. Anthony Hopkins (The Two Popes)
  3. Al Pacino (The Irishman)
  4. Joe Pesci (The Irishman)- will and should win
  5. Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood…)- should and could win

Snubs: Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse), otherwise expect this line-up at the Oscars.

Best Supporting Performance in a Motion Picture (Actress)

  1. Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell)
  2. Annette Benning (The Report)
  3. Laura Dern (Marriage Story)- will and should win
  4. Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers)- should and could win
  5. Margot Robbie (Bombshell)

Snubs: Florence Pugh (Little Women)- expect her to take Benning’s spot in the Oscar line-up.

Best Director

  1. Bong Joon Ho (Parasite)- will and should win
  2. Sam Mendes (1917)
  3. Todd Phillips (Joker)
  4. Martin Scorsese (The Irishman)- could win
  5. Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood…)

Snubs: WOMEN! Especially Greta Gerwig (Little Women) and Lulu Wang (The Farewell) who easily could have taken the spots occupied by Phillips or Tarantino. Also missing Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story).

Best Screenplay

  1. Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story)- will and should win
  2. Bong Joon Ho & Han Jin-won (Parasite)- could and should win
  3. Anthony McCarten (The Two Popes)
  4. Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood…)

Best Original Score

  1. Alexandre Desplat (Little Women)- will and should win
  2. Hildur Guonadottir (Joker)- should and could win
  3. Randy Newman (Marriage Story)
  4. Thomas Newman (1917)
  5. Daniel Pemberton (Motherless Brooklyn)

Snubs: many, but a tight category overall.

Best Original Song

  1. Beautiful Ghosts (Cats)- will and should win (personal preference though)
  2. I’m Gonna Love Me Again (Rocketman)
  3. Into the Unknown (Frozen 2)
  4. Spirit (The Lion King)
  5. Stand Up (Harriet)

Best Animated Feature Film

  1. Frozen 2- will and should win
  2. The Lion King
  3. Missing Link
  4. Toy Story 4- could win
  5. How to Train your Dragon: The Hidden World

Snubs: Klaus, I Lost my Body

Best Foreign Language Film

  1. The Farewell- should win
  2. Portrait of a Lady on Fire
  3. Parasite- will and should win
  4. Pain and Glory
  5. Traitor

Snubs: Les Miserables

Best Television Series Drama

  1. Big Little Lies
  2. The Crown- will and should win

Best Television Series Comedy or Musical
